95 Chevy Blazer engine backfires (help a poor girl out!)?
« on: October 18, 2007, 08:47:54 AM »
I'm not very car savvy, but my Blazer has had so many missfires (popping noises from the muffler and sputtering) it's crazy. I've had a new timing chain, distributor cap, and tune ups. I watch as my RPM meters lower and return to normal, this morning, they went completely to 0 and the engine turned off (on the HWY!)

Could it be a coil? I'm not quite sure what that does, but I've heard.

(Timing chain was put in about a year ago by mechanic in family. Timing "pushed forward" had no problems up until recently where it had a slight bit of popping, but it was not very loud.)

Actually it sounds like a problem with the fuel injector.

check engine lite means...check engine...get free scan at most [advance] parts stores...75 to 100 dollars at dealer...replace sensor needed....did it start with new chain..mayb idiot put it in off time or switched plug wires..double ck all...coil makes spark 4 plugs...some times they fail when hot...

out of TIME! Timing chain > gear to crank not lined up properly or Timing at Distributor was NOT properly set.

Go Chevy!! Yea you are gonna have to check it the timing wasn't advanced to far and check the wires and plugs again, The popping and back firing sounds like your valves aren't opening and closing at the right time, Therefor have your Friend put a timing light on it and have it checked out Good luck.

Proper diagnosis at the start of a problem avoids all of this crap. Forget all of what has happened or you have done and start again. Get the PCM scanned for codes and data to see if there are any hints here first. See if you can find the cylinder responsible for the misfire by shorting out cylinders one by one. If that doesn't help, start disconnecting and inspecting both ends of the spark plug wires and look for a bunch of corrosion. Do the same to the coil wire. If that doesn't find anything, you either have a big vacuum leak at the intake or the plenum, or a problem with the central port injector. You can check to see if the coil is outputting, but some of the coils are intermittently bad. I haven't seen too many coils go bad, just seen them corroded.

Start by bringing the car to a "professional" mechanic.
