Mercedes Tune-up?
« on: November 30, 2007, 08:18:31 AM »
I was wondering if I needed a Tune Up for our Mercedes. It is a 2000 E320 Wagon. The problems are that the oil was just changed, but the gas mileage is somewhat low (17 m.p.g.) instead of the usual 21 m.p.g. Then when you accelerate and then step off the gas, you hear a tapping noise. Then when you start the car, the engine revs a little, then when it comes down to about 2000 then to 1000 rpm, the tapping noise. Then it stops after a few seconds. In general, the car is a little louder than usual. It's not TOO bad, but its worse then it was before. What does it need? I am trying to avoid paying the dealer $110 just to "diagnose" whats wrong with it. Does anyone know/heard of it? Thanks!

As a general rule, a car's performance will always decrease as it gets older in age.  You cannot expect to buy a car brand new and still have the same performance 8 or 10 years down the road.  However, you can get back the best performance possible out of your car with routine tuneups.  Oil should be changed about every 3000 miles if you drive in the city most of the time, 5000-6000 miles if its mostly highways or every 6 month (whichever comes first).  Routine tuneups are very important.  I drive a 22 year old car and my mileage only dropped 4-5 miles when it was new because I've kept it up.

If its been over a year and you haven't tuned up your car yet then I advise you should do so as soon as possible.  Change your spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, accessory belt(s), distributor cap & rotor, timing chain/belt.  All of these can affect your gas mileage if even one of these things are worn out overtime.  As for the "tapping" noise, I cannot know exactly what may be causing it.  I would assume from the best of my knowledge that it only happens when the car isn't fully warm yet as you stated it could only be heard it when you start the car.  Maybe the culprit is that your timing is off and it creates a "pinging" noise.. or possibly that your belt or timing belt/chain is worn.

Even then, I would highly recommend you to go to an auto shop that does diagnostics.  It doesn't have to be a Mercedes dealer, quite frankly, I think dealer cost are overpriced.  A local diagnostic center should have cheaper price.  And if you haven't tuned up your car for over a year, you should do it as soon as possible.  Maybe after a tuneup, the "tap" would go away but either way, you will definitely see a performance gain in your gas mileage and horsepower.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell you exactly what you need without proper diagnosis, but here are some possibilities with some solutions.

*Make sure you are using premium gas no matter what the price or you will pay later in repairs.

*The tapping noise can be valve noise due to carbon deposit build up in the engine. You can obtain fuel treatment from your MB dealer to pour into your fuel tank, you may need to due it a few times.

*As far as revving after cold start, if you live in cold climate, that is normal during winter time. Otherwise, you may have a faulty temp sensor that thinks it is colder.

*As for tune-up, your spark plugs & fuel filter were due to be changed at 5 yrs and engine air filter due at 4 yrs.

*As for oil change, your vehicle requires synthetic oil and Mobil 1 is recommended by Mercedes-Benz. Your oil weight depends if you live in cold or hot climates, check with your local Mercedes-Benz service dept to find out what they use.

Note: You purchased an expensive, precise piece of machinery and using other than what is recommended by the engineers is asking to have problems and expensive repair costs.

The tapping noise you hear is most likely from the purge valve which is located under the hood on the left side[driver side] It has two vaccum hoses and an electrical plug on it.I would describe the noise as a ticking noise.with the hood open, engine on you should be able to locate the part by the noise.

You said the oil was changed.Make sure that MOBIL 1 synthetic oil was used. And if your car has over 100,000 miles you are due for spark plugs and a major service

Do not know about the tapping, but try some Chevron Techron fuel additive to see if it helps your fuel economy.
